New Port Project, Control Tower, Doha

The New Port, strategically located outside the capital city of Doha, will be a world-class facility and a vital component of Qatar’s economic infrastructure.

This port look out tower is a true feature of this megaproject, which includes a new port, a new base for the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces and the Qatar Economic Zone 3 and will span a 26.5 square kilometer area.

The twisted architectural form is encased in a complicated and changeable geometric skin. The shapes and forms adjust as the tower twists and turns, which has also been reflected in the way the building is illuminated. Indirect lighting hidden behind the skin structures have been custom made (named flux capacitor -inspired from the Back to the Future Film) from intense light from the bottom, fading out towards the top. This has been contrasted with direct light following the hexagonal shapes at the top, slowly cascading and fading out towards the bottom. Enhancing the depth and complexity of this iconic structure.
